Creating a template is a three step process:

  1. Start the designer using a blank game of the appropriate size, or start the designer using an existing game or template that's close to what you want.
  2. In the designer, change the blocks as you like them, and then save the game.
  3. Now, in the My Crosswords page locate the new game you have just created and click on the Make Template link. A new template is created from the game. The game is left unmodified.

The template will now show up in the New Crossword page. The template will appear a small black and white grid with the template name and size shown near by.

Once created, templates can be edited independently from the games from which they were created.

If you wish, you can re-use the game created in steps 1 and 2 for a new crossword puzzle which has the new template you have just created.

When creating the game in steps 1 and 2 above you should enter an appropriate title for the template. Game titles are typically theme related, but templates titles should be either a description or a simple numeric sequence for the template. Titles are not unique and so there is harm in using the same title.
